Barry Welch, 4th Dan, JKF Wado-Kai

Welcome to Guseikai Calgary Wado Karate Club. We are a karate club in the SW of Calgary that teach the art of Wado-Ryu. We are the only members of Canadian ZenKuRen Wado Karate Association (Canadian JKF Wado-Kai) in Calgary. We are also members of Karate Alberta, the National Karate Federation and are NCCP certified.

Wado Ryu is one of the four major karate styles recognized by the Japanese government and is one of the most widely trained karate styles in the world. In 1990, Sensei Barry Welch immigrated to Fredericton, New Brunswick from England and started the first Wado Ryu club in New Brunswick. Sensei Welch started karate in England in 1980 after seeing a demonstration by Sensei Barry Wilkinson at a High School in Farnham Surrey, England, an old friend invited him to a class and in 1983 he started his first club in Woking, Surrey, England.

Sensei Barry Welch opened the first Wado club called The East Canada Karate Do Wado Kai in the Harvey Elementary School, Harvey Station, New Brunswick in 1990. And in 1994 he opened a second club called The Dynamic Martial Arts Center located in the City of Fredericton, New Brunswick. In 1997 Sensei Welch became a founding member of the Canadian ZenKuRen Wado Karate Association. The CZWKA is affiliated to the Japan Karate Federation Wado Kai which is located in Tokyo, Japan. The JKF is the only organization recognized by the Japanese government to represent karate in Japan. The Canadian ZenKuren Wado Karate Association, under the leadership by Sensei Norma Foster (6th Dan) of Guseikai Vancouver, is the only official Wado-Kai group recognized in Canada. In 2000 the Dynamic Martial Arts Center moved to its present location 186 Lincoln Road, Fredericton, New Brunswick. With the move, the committee chose a new club name "Shuhari New Brunswick Karate-Do Wado-Kai" or "Shuhari New Brunswick".

In December 2004, Sensei Welch and Sensei Levesque-Welch moved on to new challenges in Calgary, Alberta.  Shuhari New Brunswick is now under the leadership of Sensei Jeremy Durelle.

Shortly after moving to Calgary, they opened a new karate club in the NW of Calgary and chose the name of Guseikai Calgary Wado Karate Club.

In January 2006, they both started assisting Sensei Shawn Crawford with his children classes.  Due to personal reasons, Sensei Crawford asked Sensei Welch and Sensei Levesque-Welch to teach his students on a full time basis. In September 2006, the NW dojo moved to Sensei Crawford's location.

Classes are instructed by Sensei Barry Welch (4th Dan) and by Sensei Nicole Levesque-Welch (2nd Dan)
